Zelos – Gusto for Lingua Franca by the Department of English (PG)

'Zelos – Gusto for Lingua Franca' – The Club of Department of English (PG) conducted a Debate Competition on 19 October 2019. The topic for the debate was “Academic Dishonesty: The First Step to Corruption”. The judge for the event was Dr. Gurubasavaraja - PG Coordinator.

Debate is a contest between two speakers or two groups of speakers to show their skills and abilities in an argument over a given topic. Speakers who agree with the topic are known as ‘Affirmatives' and Speakers who disagree with the topic are called the ‘Negatives’. Debating is a great confidence builder for people from all walks of life, especially the young people. Debate is different from any other type of speech because you are not just giving information but also defending the idea given through that information.

There were two teams of six members each. Each participant was given six minutes to speak and both the Team Leaders were given additional five minutes to wind up their arguments. The participants put forth their best effort in defending their theory. The ecstasy in the hall was evident by the end of the competition. Dr. Gurubasavaraja spoke a few words before announcing the winners. As the PG Coordinator it was thrilling to see the passion in the eyes of the young people. He stated his views and then declared the winners
