Industrial Visit to IBAB, Bengaluru – Dept of BSC – Feb 14, 2020

The Department of Science organized an Industrial Visit to Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology (IBAB), Electronic City, Bangalore on 14th February 2020 for the IV semester BSc (PCM & MEC) students. A team of 60 students along with 3 faculty members visited the institute set up by the Department of IT, BT and S&T, Government of Karnataka.

The faculty in charge, took the team of visitors to the conference hall where an introduction to the work and functions of IBAB was given. The institute is located in a 20 acre campus in Electronics City with excellent infrastructure, students' hostel and other amenities. IBAB has been a 'Centre of Excellence for Research and Training in Bioinformatics' of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India It has several state of the art facilities to its bioinformatics and biotechnology laboratories to enhance its training and research capabilities. IBAB also hosts GANIT Labs, a multi-institutional public-private partnership under the aegis of Department of Electronics and IT, Government of India, and Department of IT, BT and ST, Government of Karnataka, that works in the area of genome sequencing and data analysis.

Later on the students and faculty members were taken to various labs. The research scholars explained how the various disciplines overlap in research and development. They could also explain to the students how different concepts in mathematics are widely used in their laboratories dealing with biotechnology, biochemistry and bioinformatics.

The visit helped the students to know about the various aspects of bioinformatics as well as an insight into the research and development activities in biotechnology. The chemistry students of our college got an idea regarding research lab after visiting the DNA sequencing and biochemistry labs. Even though the terminology used to the computer science students were a little tough for them to understand, they could recognise the application of computer science in the field of bioinformatics.

The institute runs an MSc in 'Biotechnology & Bioinformatics' (recognized, and the degree awarded by the Bangalore University), Bengaluru) and a Ph.D. program (degree awarded by Manipal University). The faculty members explained how to apply and join for the courses run by the institute. They also explained the eligibility criteria and mode of selection. Thus the visit imparted some new knowledge on new arenas in their disciplines and could motivate the students towards higher studies.
