INFINITY 2022 - GUEST LECTURE SERIES: 21 FEBRUARY 2021 - POSTGRADUATE CENTRE OF ST. FRANCIS DE SALES COLLEGE

INFINITY 2022, the guest lecture series of the Postgraduate Centre of St Francis De Sales College was conducted from 21 st February 2022. Psylight Club, Association of The Department of Psychology, Postgraduate Centre, in association with the research cell conducted the first session on 21 st February on the topic “Current Status of philosophy of Science”. The session was conducted in the online platform, Google meet. Around 95 students participated in the session.

The resource person for the workshop was Mr. Premanand V, Associate Professor, Department of PG Psychology, St Agnes Centre for Postgraduate Studies and Research, Mangalore. Dr Premanand is the Associate Professor in the Department of PG Psychology, St. Agnes Centre for Post Graduate Studies and Research (Autonomous), Mangalore. He completed his PhD from Bharathiar University in the year 2005 on “Academic Achievement in relation to Emotional Intelligence and Probabilistic Orientation among Engineering Undergraduate Students.” His areas of interest include clinical psychology, Counselling psychology and positive psychology. He has been ably guiding several PhD scholars in the research endeavours. He has many national and international publications as well as book chapters to his credit.

He started his lecture by explaining what is science and what is philosophy. Philosophy is the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, existence and reality, when considered as an academic discipline. He spoke about the various pillars of philosophy like metaphysics, aesthetics and ethics. He then went on to discuss about ontology and epistemology of research. Next was a discussion about the important paradigms in research which are positivism, post positivism and critical theory. Each of the paradigms were explained in detailed with emphasis on the different methodologies that are adopted from the paradigms. This was followed by a question-and-answer session for clarifying the queries of the students.
